What Most People Don’t Talk About: Period Pain

A lovely reminder, as the post mentions, that all women have periods. “There’s a lot of ignorance and shame surrounding this subject..Girls get their period once a month. Sometimes it gets messy.” It can be a difficult thing to talk about because of the way society makes it an embarrassing topic. I remember the first time I discovered I had my period at 12 years old.

There was a day where the boys and girls were separated in order to talk about our body. Luckily, because of that it didn’t come as quite a shock. Although, it isn’t talked about often, it’s so common and we (women) all experience it. It’s a natural part of being a women and it’s something to embrace. I have previously talked to family and friends about their level of period pain. However, many people say that their period pain is very tolerable or they don’t feel any pain at all (lucky ones). Then, there are a few that have extreme pain – which is how I feel for 1-2 days of the month. This made me have to come home from work in my previous jobs, every time it fell on the first two days. The pain is unbearable. The menstrual cramps are something else, and makes me want to turn into a cat and curl beside the fire place.

n.JPGWhen I was younger, my sister made a tiny amusing booklet of all the things I needed to know about periods. It was entertaining and very informative using colourful highlighters and pens. A nurse came into school to explain to the girls that there will be mild discomfort and a cramping sensation. They did not mention that every person feels the pain in different degrees. Drinking warm water and not consuming any cold, icy beverages will lessen the pain. Holding a warm object against your body can soothe your stomach .

The best thing to do is to keep track in order to know when to expect your next period. Dark chocolate also helps especially when you are likely to crave something sweet (I know I do). There have been events or days of work I had to call off due to my period, but I don’t believe that our period should stop us from doing the things we love, if we are able to do it for the other 3 weeks of the month. Be kind to yourself. It’s common to be silent to mention that we are on our periods.There is still a societal taboo when speaking about periods. No one should ever feel ashamed to talk about their period.

h You can probably relate to the amount of long lost underwears and the amount of money we will spend in our lifetime on pads alone. Chella Quint, a menstruation education researcher, says it’s important to teach girls to see that there’s nothing shameful about menstruation. “If you menstruate, having regular periods is a vital sign, like your heart rate or your blood pressure, that shows your body is working well.”

  1. This is such a great topic and thanks for bringing it up. Periods are a natural part of life, a natural part of the human race and the whole life cycle. It could be because we are afraid of periods, or ashamed of them that we don’t really talk about it out in the open. Or it could be seen as a sign of weakness. Or perhaps it is taboo in some cultures to talk about it.

    For me, how I feel on my period depends on how well I take care of myself in the last month. If I watch what I eat and eat foods with less oil and salt then there are times when I’d don’t feel a thing at all on my period. But usually I’m not that disciplined and I end up feeling terrible pain and nausea for the first 2-3 days. Without medication, there is no way I can function. I don’t even feel like eating anything :D

    1. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience! That’s very true, and even though it’s such a common thing, it’s still – as you said – taboo in some cultures. Or maybe it’s the stereotype that women should always be clean. I am similar as well in terms of what I eat. If I don’t have enough protein it will usually be a lot more painful.

  2. This is going to look like advertisement, but no!
    My menstrual cramps are hell (or were) strong pain, headache, vomit, lack of appetite to say the least, the doctor send me and my sisters some pain killers which work amazing, but I think anything unnatural entering your body is bad, I mean with the food nowadays we eat should be enough for our gorgeous body, so every month I was like, ok I’m going to be strong, I can do this, I don’t need those pills but every time I failed. Until this month I acctually was curious of how the body reacts to period and I search: menstrual pain on youtube and this video showed up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vp-pJXhWwhg
    Against all the odds, IT WORKED! I’m still fascinated by that.
    I just wanted to share and I came across your blog post so it was now or never!

    1. Thank you for sharing the link. I listened to it for the hour and it made my body much more relaxed, and the pain definitely lessened a lot! I am the same where I prefer not to take any medication. Although, it’s mostly because it doesn’t make a huge difference for me. The power of music though :) that’s so great – I’m glad to hear it’s feeling better. X

  3. The pain is the worst, isn’t it. I don’t get stomach cramps every time but when they hit, it feels like I’m dying. It’s the most pain I’ve ever experienced. It freaks me out each time I get it because I wonder if it will ever go away. And I used to think it wasn’t normal because no-one mentioned it. I’d think if the pain was that bad, people would say something. Then when I talked to friends, I realised some of them actually have it worse than me and feel incredible pain every month. Some of them even have to go to the doctor. So we’re all affected differently. Good to talk about it though.

    1. Thank you for sharing your experience with me. I really feel what you said – when you said I’d think if the pain was that bad, people would say something. It wasn’t until I was talking to friends back in high school until I realised how badly others can feel the pain.
